Pheromones
SEX PHEROMONES OF INSECTS
Description
Insect pheromones are highly volatile substances secreted by insects in microquantities to communicate with each other. In the world practice of the Integrated Plant Protection System (IPM), four groups of pheromones are distinguished:
- sex pheromones - usually secreted by females to attract individuals of the opposite sex;
- aggregation pheromones - a signal for insects of the same species to gather in a certain place;
- alarm pheromones - distress signal;
- oviposition pheromones - a signal indicating the place for laying eggs.
Mode of application
Pheromones are used as a pest control method, usually in the form of baits and traps. In Moldova, more than 70% are sex pheromones used for pheromonitoring and regulation the number of insects by creating a male vacuum or by the method of sexual disorientation.

Application features
The main factor influencing the activity of summer insects is temperature, the optimum use is within + 18 ... + 24 ° C. The effective area of the traps is 15-30m. It is recommended to place traps at a distance of at least 50m from each other. When the pest population density is low, it is sufficient to use about 30 traps/ha. When placing pheromone traps, the direction of the wind should be taken into account (orient with the wind).
